Bangladesh is looking to augment its export portfolio through the cultivation of a new high-yielding pineapple variety.
For the first time in the country, farmers have begun growing the super sweet MD-2 variety pineapple, renowned for its superior taste and longevity post-harvest.
Project Director of the Year-Round Fruit Production for Nutrition Improvement Project, Mehedi Masood, informed that the country has produced 150 tonnes of MD-2 pineapples this year. The produce is currently undergoing post-harvest testing before it gets shipped abroad. He further revealed that last year, seven lakh seedlings of the high-yielding MD-2 variety were planted on 15 hectares of land in Tangail and Madhupur districts.
Data from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) showed 538,000 tons of pineapples were grown in 2021-22, up from 469,000 tons a year ago.
